Executive Summary
This report details the Hatch scoping study conducted in 2011 for the Kingash project, evaluating beneficiation, smelting, and refining options for the Kingashsky, Verkhnekingashsky, and Kuyovsky deposits. Three beneficiation options were analyzed: the Gipronikel flow sheet, the Valleriite Regrind flow sheet, and the Sulphidisation flow sheet. The study utilized mass and energy balances developed through METSIM™ modeling to assess capital and operating costs, ultimately selecting Option 2 (Valleriite Regrind) for the financial assessment due to its balance of recovery and cost.
The proposed concentrator design processes 18.5 Mt/a of mill feed with a throughput of 2,267 t/h. The selected Option 2 flow sheet includes coarse crushing, two-stage grinding using a SAG mill and ball mill, and a flotation circuit featuring rougher, cleaner, and scavenger stages with column flotation for valleriite recovery. This configuration aims to optimize nickel and copper recovery while minimizing power consumption and footprint compared to the older Gipronikel technology.
The smelting and refining complex treats the concentrate using an Electric Arc Furnace to produce matte, followed by an Ausmelt converter for upgrading. The Base Metal Refinery utilizes leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning to produce nickel and copper cathodes, with cobalt hydroxide and PGM alloys recovered as by-products. Gas cleaning involves an electrostatic precipitator and a double contact sulphuric acid plant to capture SO2 emissions. The project is currently in the development phase pending further engineering and testwork.
