Executive Summary
The Mayumba Exploration Permit is currently classified as an exploration property rather than an advanced asset. A preliminary economic assessment study conducted by MICON in 2024 outlines the proposed recovery methods for the project. The study focuses on extracting value from brine resources through a multi-stage thermal and crystallization process designed to produce saleable Potash.
The primary recovery route involves heating the brine to evaporate water and precipitate sodium chloride (NaCl). Once potassium chloride (KCl) saturation is reached, the hot brine is transferred to a cooling crystallization train. This train cools the brine in steps down to 25 °C, causing KCl to crystallize at each stage. The resulting KCl is then separated, de-brined, dried, and compacted into a saleable MOP product.
By-products include dried NaCl or disposal via sea water dissolution, while the MgCl2-rich residual brine is diluted and disposed of into the ocean. An alternative process route is acknowledged but requires further investigation during a prefeasibility or feasibility study. This future study must also account for potential changes in brine composition between initial cold leaching and later hot leaching phases.
