Executive Summary
Volt Energy Technologies is developing the Rainbow Lake Lithium Project in Alberta, Canada. The project utilizes proprietary IES-300 Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology to produce 22,700 tonnes per year of Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate (LHM). The operation involves a decentralized brine production plan across two Development Areas (Muskeg and Keg River Formations) with a combined throughput of ~260,000 m³/d. The process includes brine pre-treatment, lithium extraction, concentration, and a central processing facility for final conversion to battery-grade LHM.
The project employs a decentralized operating plan to leverage existing oil and gas infrastructure, minimizing capital costs for pipelines and power costs. Volt will build lithium extraction facilities (DLE Facilities) in each Development Area to create a concentrated lithium chloride eluate, which is then transported to a central processing facility (CPF). The CPF upgrades the eluate to battery-grade LHM through ion exchange, crystallization, carbonation, and lime conversion processes.
The overall lithium recovery for the two primary zones of interest is 11.6%, with the Keg River zone at 16.4% and the Muskeg zone at 5.6%. The DLE process uses Volt’s highly selective IES-300 compound to typically recover over 98% of lithium found in source brines. The process also minimizes external water usage and chemical reagent purchases through recycling of clean water and salt.
