Sumner Mine: Dual-Plant Silica Sand Processing

Overview

The Sumner Mine operates a sophisticated dual-plant processing system for producing high-quality frac sand. The wet-processing plant is located adjacent to mining operations, while the dry-processing facility is situated 8 miles east in Weyerhaeuser, WI. This integrated system processes ROM sandstone into specialized products for hydraulic fracturing applications.

Key Process Stages

  • Primary Crushing: ROM sandstone is crushed to manageable sizes while preserving grain integrity
  • Wet Processing: Material undergoes size, shape, and density separation at 500 tph capacity, producing 8/50 and 30/70 WIP material
  • Material Transport: WIP is trucked to dry plant via third-party contractor (Antczak Trucking)
  • Dry Processing: Final drying and sorting at 375 tph capacity yields 20/40, 30/70, and 100 Mesh (50/140) products
