Executive Summary
The Sumner Silica Sand Mine operates processing facilities in two distinct locations: a wet-processing plant located on the property adjacent to the mining operations, and a dry-processing plant situated in Weyerhaeuser, WI, approximately 8 miles east on U.S. Highway 8. The combined operations are designed to wash, dry, and sort/size ROM sand to yield a product of sufficient quality for hydraulic fracturing (frac sand). The wet-processing plant has a nameplate capacity of 500 short tons per hour, while the dry-processing plant operates at 300 tph.
Historical production data from the Sumner and Weyerhaeuser processing plants indicates a 4-year total of approximately 2.5 million short tons of finished product. During the first nine months of 2017 alone, SES produced almost 1.2 million short tons of finished silica sand. Both processing facilities operate year-round, round the clock, and employ 40 people each. Quality control measures, including laboratory sampling, are implemented at various stages throughout the wet- and dry-processing operations.
