Executive Summary
This technical report details the recovery methods and Coal Preparation Plant (CPP) design for the Vista Coal Project, a large-scale surface minable thermal coal deposit located in Hinton, Alberta. The design, led by Sedgman, refines previous studies by removing thermal dryers and implementing reflux classifiers for more efficient finer coal recovery. The project is multi-phased, with Phase 1 establishing a 1,500 t/h capacity producing 6 Mtpa, while Phase 2 expands throughput to 3,000 t/h for a total capacity of 12 Mtpa.
Flotation was evaluated but deemed not warranted due to capital costs and unknowns regarding ultra-fine coal floatability. Instead, the selected process circuit utilizes Dense Medium Cyclones (DMC) for coarse material and Reflux Classifiers for mid-size fractions, ensuring high yield and product specification compliance. The plant includes comprehensive tailings filtration and product handling infrastructure, including overland conveyors and train loadout systems designed to interface with export rail networks.
