Executive Summary

The K.Hill process plant is designed to treat 200,000 tonnes per annum of run-of-mine manganese ore from the K.Hill open pit. The ore, comprising manganese and iron shales, has an average grade of 24 percent manganese oxide. The objective is to produce a High Purity Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate (HPMSM) product suitable for the battery market. The process involves crushing and grinding to a P80 of 150 microns, followed by acid reductive leaching in sulphate media using sulphur dioxide as a reductant.

Following leaching, a sequential purification process removes base metal impurities. This includes precipitation of iron and aluminium using lime and limestone, followed by base metal precipitation using sodium hydrosulphide. The purified solution undergoes solvent extraction using D2EPHA extractant and fluoride polishing. Finally, the solution is subjected to evaporative crystallisation, filtration, and drying to produce the final HPMSM product.
