Executive Summary
The Hauber Uranium Project is located in the northern Black Hills uranium district of South Dakota. Historical production in the district totals approximately 3.2 million tons of uranium ore, all processed at the Mines Development, Inc. mill at Edgemont, South Dakota. This technical report evaluates two primary recovery methods: conventional acid leach milling and in-situ recovery (ISR). The conventional milling process demonstrated overall uranium recovery rates of 90-95%, with vanadium recovery of 75-80% from tailings. Historical test work conducted by the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI) in 1979 indicated good amenability to ISR methods using sodium carbonate/bicarbonate lixiviant, achieving uranium extraction rates of up to 87.2% in laboratory tests. The ammonium carbonate lixiviant showed poorer results and is unlikely to be used due to groundwater restoration challenges. Physical upgrading by screening was found to be ineffective for these ores.
Processing Methods Evaluated
- Conventional Milling: Acid leach, resin-in-pulp, solvent extraction
- In-Situ Recovery: Carbonate/bicarbonate lixiviant
- Physical Upgrading: Not applicable (screening ineffective)
