Executive Summary
The Olympias Project is a multi-phase development located in Greece, involving the rehabilitation of an existing concentrator at Olympias and the construction of a new concentrator at the Stratoni mine site. The project aims to treat reclaimed tailings initially, followed by underground ore, and eventually scale up to a larger capacity operation. The initial phase utilizes the rehabilitated Olympias concentrator to process 720,000 dry tonnes per annum of tailings for 3 to 4 years, transitioning to 400,000 dtpa of underground ore for a further 4 years. A new concentrator is scheduled to come online in year 9 to handle 850,000 dtpa.
The processing strategy focuses on the recovery of multiple commodities including lead, silver, zinc, and gold. The existing plant will produce lead/silver, zinc, and gold-bearing pyrite/arsenopyrite concentrates through mechanical flotation. The new Stratoni concentrator will employ a conventional design with SAG and ball milling, followed by differential flotation to separate the three concentrate streams. Infrastructure upgrades include new process control systems, flotation cells, and filtration equipment.
A future gold plant utilizing Outotec’s flash smelting technology is under evaluation to process the gold-bearing pyrite concentrate into a copper/gold matte. This option includes arsenic stabilization via scorodite formation in an autoclave. The project is currently in the development stage, with detailed engineering and testwork required to finalize the flash smelting process design and costs. The operation is supported by existing power and water infrastructure, with tailings managed through backfill and a new Tailings Management Facility at Kokinolakkos.
