Executive Summary
This technical report details the recovery methods and operational status of the Kharasan Uranium Mine operated by Uranium One Inc. The facility utilizes an In-Situ Recovery (ISR) method where acid is injected into a well field to leach uranium from the ore body. The pregnant solution is pumped to a surface process plant for treatment, with barren solution returned to the field. The plant is described as orderly and clean, maintaining efficient operations with a focus on solution handling and uranium recovery.
The processing plant employs ion exchange technology to recover uranium from the production solutions. The flow sheet includes IX columns and U-tube columns for stripping resins, followed by denitrification and precipitation using caustic. The resulting yellowcake is dewatered in a cone and filtered using a Larox pressure filter. The final product contains 48% to 50% uranium with 18% moisture and is shipped to a refiner in Stepnogorsk.
Operational data indicates a plant recovery of uranium from solution averaging 98%, with overall production averaging 96.5% of the uranium in productive solutions. The plant operates at approximately 800 m3/h solution throughput. Acid consumption is tracked, with actual usage at 120 kg/kg U compared to an estimated 180 kg/kg U. The facility also treats solution from the adjacent Baiken-U operation on a contract basis until Baiken-U commissions its own plant in late 2012.
