Executive Summary
The Crater Lake Scandium Project, developed by Imperial Mining Group, is a preliminary economic assessment focused on the recovery of Scandium and Rare Earth Elements (REE) from an open pit mine located near Schefferville, Quebec. The project utilizes a two-stage processing approach, with a Beneficiation Plant at the mine site and a Hydrometallurgical Plant in Sept-Îles, QC. The mine is currently in the development phase, with a planned annual throughput of 426,100 tonnes at the beneficiation stage.
The Beneficiation Plant employs magnetic separation techniques, including low and high intensity magnetic separation, to produce a Sc/REE rich mineral concentrate. This concentrate is then transported to the Hydrometallurgical Plant for further processing. The hydrometallurgical circuit involves high pressure caustic leaching, hydrochloric acid leaching, and solvent extraction to isolate Scandium Oxide and a mixed REE product.
Final processing includes the production of Al-2%Sc Master Alloy via a direct electrolysis process similar to the Hall-Héroult method. The project aims to produce 87.3 tonnes per annum of Sc2O3, 1,865 tonnes per annum of mixed REE, and 2,562 tonnes per annum of Al-2%Sc Master Alloy. The process design accounts for harsh climate conditions at Crater Lake, limiting the beneficiation plant operation to six months annually.
